Movie Break: Gafla (2006)
Published by Octron on April 28, 2010
After the downward spiral of NEPSE, its time to take some break during this May Movement (as quoted by Maoist Supremo – Prachanda, as THIRD REVOLUTION). Market is all time low, Country is severely being hit political turmoil and well Economy you can easily guess; Inflation all time high, shortage of daily commodities and scarcity of basic essentials like WATER, ELECTRICITY has hit kathmanduties like hurling stones in Nepal Bandh. Well, more is sure to come in coming days of indefinite strike, May 01 movement and much more. So, instead of worrying about coming days, why don’t we get to the basics of Stock with entertainment; Ohhh.. ya. We are living in a country where you wont find clean and safe drinking water but HD quality movies in the footpath for mere 25 Rupees.
I would strongly recommend anyone who has been investing or are planning to invest or even divest from the stocks to watch Hindi feature film Gafla. Released in mid 2006, the debutante director Sameer Hanchate tells the story of one of the biggest scamsters of the stock market and even makes him a hero in the climax of the film. The movie based upon life of Harshad Shantilal Mehta, an Indian stock broker and who was alleged to have engineered the rise in the Bombay Stock Exchange in the year 1992. Exploiting several loopholes in the banking system, Mehta and his associates siphoned off funds from inter-bank transactions and bought shares heavily at a premium across many segments, triggering a rise in the BSE Sensex.
GAFLA is a story about ordinary people or rather an ordinary young man, Subodh [Vinod Sharawat], in ordinary circumstances. Subodh starts out like any middle class guy, with limited opportunities to survive and go ahead. Perhaps, he has a little bit more drive than the others, more energy and bigger dreams.
Subodh’s intentions are good and understandable in terms of ordinary ambitions. Subodh wants to make money, to be successful and enters the stock market. His brilliance makes him successful, but he is at the mercy of big players. Faced with a choice of either following a secondary career, dominated by big players or becoming a big player himself, he opts for the latter. But, as an outsider, he shouldn’t have become the biggest player of all. He didn’t know where to stop. He didn’t pause to strengthen the base of political and institutional support before rising further. He is inexperienced.
So, when things go wrong, Subodh is crucified for doing the same fraud that everybody was doing.
The film tries to draw a line between “conspiracy” and “scam” through the introspection and intervention of celluloid intellect. ‘Gafla’ meaning “scam” can be described as the illegal act. The film is microscopic view of share and stock market scams where the film unravels the hidden truth of the influential, corrupt and the mighty outlaws.
